Everyone But Me

It happens to all of us. You’re feeling pretty good about yourself, you sign into your social media accounts and BAM!, you start comparing your life to everyone else’s. “Wow, even with 17 kids, that family has the cleanest kitchen!”, “How can Pam and Waldo afford to go on vacation EVERY weekend?!” “Oh there are my friends…at a party? I'm not at the party. Do they hate me?”. And suddenly, you’re no longer feeling so good. You get hit with jealously, negative self-talk, and before you know it, you’ve fallen down the deep, dark hole of unworthiness. To take it one step further, what if you’re pursuing a creative endeavor as your life’s career path? This is an area already bathed in daily rejection, yet it seems like everyone around you is getting opportunities, booking gigs, and landing deals? “Everyone But Me” is a podcast that explores the topic of comparing your success to the success of those around you, especially in the world of social media. How do you stay creatively connected to your dreams and aspirations in an isolated, non-linear world that emphasizes comparison to others and is seemingly bestowing success on everyone but you? Thanks for listening! Dustin Rubin is a voice actor and producer who lives in Los Angeles.

"You can't sustain a life based on complementary tweets."

Excited to launch this bad boy with my first guest, Lance Rubin.  He's an actor and musician turned full-time writer.  And he's also my brother.  His debut young adult novel, Denton Little's Deathdate, is available now and you can also read his musings at lancerubin.com or follow him on Twitter @lancerubinparty

In this episode, we talk about various topics including the unempowering process of auditioning, comparing yourself to others, acting & voice acting & writing, blocking out the noise of social media (good and bad), how not to become jaded while pursuing your creative dreams, and squirrel penis.

This was awesome Dustin! No one's ever told me to up my social media game (and if they did, I think I would feel similarly conflicted), but when I'm feeling jealous or negative about social media, I try to remind myself that here I am living this super awesome and EXCLUSIVE life, where only my super amazing friends get to know the exciting details. That just seems so much cooler than a party where tickets are free!
